Creatives & Creators

Is art the same thing as creative? Is an artist a creative? Is a creative always an artist? Does anyone care?

Creative means creator.

Can creators create nonart? A creator could create a company, a planned housing development, the dreaded “content”... obviously art, architecture, design, typesetting, sculpting, welding, woodworking, carpentry.. those things are art.

Art is art is art.

Okay wait I think we’ve got it: The terms "creative" and "artist" are related but not synonymous, and their distinctions can vary depending on context and interpretation. Here's a general difference between the two:

Creativity is a broad attribute that refers to the ability to generate new ideas, concepts, or solutions, often involving innovation and originality.

Creativity is not limited to the arts but can be found in various fields such as science, technology, business, and more.

Creatives may include individuals who come up with novel ideas, problem solvers, inventors, designers, writers, musicians, and people in many other professions.

Being creative does not necessarily require formal training or professional recognition. It's more about a mindset and approach to thinking.

An artist is a specific subset of creatives who typically work within the realm of the arts, such as visual arts, performing arts, music, literature, or any other form of creative expression.

Artists often create works of art that are intended for aesthetic or expressive purposes. They may use various mediums, techniques, and styles to convey their ideas or emotions.

Artists may receive formal training, develop a distinctive personal style, and gain recognition or accreditation for their work through exhibitions, performances, publications, or other means.

While all artists are creatives, not all creatives are artists, as creativity extends beyond the boundaries of traditional art forms.
